Want to make the switch to green cleaning products? You may be wondering what to do with all of those old cleaning products. Most people who see the (green) light and have an eco-conversion simply sweep all their conventional cleaning products into the garbage, which is not a good idea. The greenest way to transition over to environmentally-friendly cleaning products is actually to use up the conventional cleaners you already own and then simply don’t buy them anymore.
If you dump all the toxic chemicals that you were previously using to clean your house into the garbage, they just end up in a landfill, or potentially leaking into groundwater that people may rely on. And really, the greenest thing you can do is to not buy new—just use up what you have and then buy (or make your own) green products. I know this seems a little counterintuitive. Now that you’re on Team Green, be patient and properly dispose of or use up those conventional cleaning products.
If you’re concerned (rightfully so) about harmful fumes from these products, be sure to dispose of them in the proper way by following your local regulations. This could involve taking them to a nearby hazardous waste facility, or pouring the cleaner on cat litter that’s then bagged and thrown in the garbage. For cleaning products that you don’t need to handle with gloves, you can pour them down the drain and flush with plenty of water.
We’re excited that you’re exploring the world of safer cleaning products! When you’re ready to go completely green, you can use a local cleaning service in your local area, set up a recurring clean and then restock your cleaning with green products.
